The studio
Studio Ruang was founded in Singapore in 2016. "Ruang" means space in Malay and Indonesian — the word we kept coming back to when we tried to describe what we actually do, which is give a room back to the people living in it.
We're a small, six-person practice, residential-first, with a short list of commercial fit-outs each year for operators we believe in. We take on a limited number of homes at a time so that each one gets the attention it needs from the first sketch to the last chair placed.
Our approach comes back to three things, in this order: light, materiality, and restraint. We'd rather leave a room slightly underfurnished than crowd it with things that don't need to be there.

Repairs stay visible rather than disguised; new work doesn't pretend to be old.
